Overview
This was a book redesign project to reimagine Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland which I completed in 2023 for a publishing class with the application of typesetting, graphic design, and book binding skills. I utilized Adobe InDesign and Illustrator to create a 5.125 x 7.75” saddle-stitch bounded, soft cover paperback book in six weeks time.
Design Process
Illustrations
I created silhouette illustrations for chapter openers and as a decorative element through out the book interior.
Typography
FHA Condensed French NC is a sophisticated typeface that introduces a nostalgic, storybook charm, reflecting the Victorian setting of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Its use is particularly effective on the front and back matter, offering a striking and memorable visual impact. Paired with Garamond for the body text, a sophisticated serif typeface known for its excellent legibility and timeless design, this combination is ideal for enhancing the classic tone of this novel.
Print Production
My decision to use a saddle stitch binding for this soft-cover book was driven by the desire for simplicity and elegance. I carefully chose Lynx 100 lb Cover paper for the exterior, prioritizing durability to protect the interior pages in the absence of a hardcover. For the internal pages, I selected Lynx 70 lb Text paper, knowing its weight would support double-sided printing while maintaining sharp readability with no bleed-through, enhancing the overall reading experience.
